Celebrate The Day of the Dead In Los Angeles

Sep 25, 2017 Dr Kristina Nelson

Los Angeles is known for hosting great Day of the Dead celebrations, and this year the city will kick off the holiday with a host of fun events. The Day of the Dead, a traditional Mexican Holiday following Halloween, reminds us about why it’s important to celebrate the lives of the deceased. This year, Los Angeles will offer some great events to help kick off this cultural holiday.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with what the Day of the Dead is all about, it’s a yearly event where people come together to celebrate loved ones that have passed away. Rather than being about mourning, the day is about celebrating life and helping deceased loved ones find their way into the afterlife. Traditionally, graves of loved ones are decorated with sugar skulls, marigolds, and food offerings.

Hollywood Forever Cemetery’s Dia De Los Muertos

Hollywood Forever Cemetery will host a full day of celebrations on October 28th, providing guests with plenty of activities and cultural fun. This twelve hour party runs from noon until midnight, and includes decorations on famous celebrity graves like Rudy Valetino, Johnny Ramone, and Dee Dee Ramone, done in traditional Day of the Dead fashion. Plus, live bands will be present playing great music all day long.  Tickets cost $20 and children 4 and under are free.

Dia De Los Muertos At Olvera Street

If you’re looking for something that’s fun and free, then Dia De Los Muertos at Olvera Street just might be up your ally. This yearly event takes place at El Pueblo in downtown Los Angeles, and runs from October 25th to November 2nd. There will be plenty of culture and family fun to enjoy, including street performers, Aztec dancers, mariachi bands, and games for children. Plus, if you want to, you can stop and grab a bite to eat and one of the restaurants found on location.
